The value of Daniel O’Leary’s books is where they come from. Not the address of the publisher of course, but how they arise in O’Leary’s own heart and mind. You will find some of his work in the form of deep reflection on an insight or a conversion experienced while on retreat. Some of his books are a collation of short meditations. And all come also from accompanying others in their struggles and dreams. This is what makes his books so relevant and real. This one, Treasured and Transformed, is no exception. Richard Rohr commenting on it, says: “This is the wisdom that only comes from having ‘been there’, having done your homework and having met God.”
Among the 26 reflections in this book, one stands out for me as epitomizing the very point made above. It is entitled “Darkest meanest mud and muck of things”, which is about how we can discover the power of the resurrection in the most unexpected places and experiences, particularly the negative ones because that’s “where the light gets in”, to use the words of composer/singer Leonard Cohen.
